Primary substrate of the firefly luciferase light producing system.

  • Firefly luciferase substrate

D-Luciferin, also called firefly luciferin, is the compound used by many Lampyridae species as the primary substrate for light emission with the enzyme luciferase (EC producing the characteristic yellow light emission from fireflies. Since the luciferase enzyme is now widely used in biochemical assays, this substrate is highly useful for a variety of ultrasensitive chemiluminescent methods. The biochemistry of the enzyme reaction requires adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and therefore can also be used to measure ATP levels, providing a HTS method of monitoring, cell number, cell health and viability.
