This diacetate derivative of rose bengal exhibits greatly improved membrane permeability, allowing it to accumulate intracellularly where esterase activity releases the active rose bengal photosensitizer.

  • Cell permeable generator of singlet oxygen

Rose bengal has been widely used in photodynamic therapy of tumors, to inactivate viruses, gram-positive bacteria and protozoa, and to produce photohemolysis, and induce occlusion of blood vessels in a procedure called photothrombosis. This diacetate analog exhibits greatly improved membrane permeability and cell permeation. Activation with UV light at 561 nm causes singlet oxygen production and photosensitization.
