The NDUFV2 gene encodes the 24-kD subunit of the mitochondrial NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I of the respiratory chain). The protein belongs to the complex I 24 kDa subunit family. It is the core subunit of the mitochondrial membrane respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I) that is believed to belong to the minimal assembly required for catalysis. NDUFV2 constitutes one genetic risk factor for PD, and the mutation may well be a cause of complex I deficiency in this disease.
