Vesicle mediated protein sorting plays an important role in segregation of intracellular molecules into distinct organelles. VPS41 (vacuolar protein sorting 41) is the human ortholog of yeast Vps41 protein. Yeast Vps41 is a subunit of AP3 (heterotetrameric adaptor protein complex 3) and HOPS (homotypic fusion and protein transport) complexes and is involved in trafficking of proteins from the late Golgi to the vacuole. In mammalian cells, Vps41 was found to be a member of HOPS complex, mediating the trafficking of proteins to lysosomes . It has been reported that human VPS41 has a HOPS-independent function in the LAMP carrier pathway and also participates in lysosomal maturation, probably as part of the HOPS complex .
