PUM2 (Human Pumilio homology protein 2), a member of the PUF protein family, binds to 3′ untranslated regions (3′ UTRs) of mRNA and to repress gene expression by controlling cytoplasmic polyadenylation and affecting mRNA translation . When translationally dormant, PUM2, CPEB (CPE-binding protein) and Maskin form a complex on maternal cyclin B1 mRNA, precluding the formation of the active translation initiation complex . PUM2 has been found to play a role in the mammalian nervous system, in particular in regulating morphology, arborization and excitability of neuronal dendrites .
