Cytochrome c oxidase(COX) catalyzes the transfer of electrons from reduced cytochrome c to molecular oxygen. Subunit VIIa of mammalian COX exists in at least 2 isoforms, liver and muscle. COX7A1(Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 7A1, mitochondrial) is also named as COX7AH, cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIIa-H, cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIIa-M and is the muscle isoform of COX subunit VIIa. Northern-blot analysis of primate tissues demonstrated that COXVIIa-M mRNA is present only in muscle tissues.
