Proteins and Peptides
These peptides correspond to the C-terminus of the 65-residue polypeptide hirudin, a potent thrombin inhibitor found in the saliva of the leech Hirudo medicinalis. Treatment of hirudin with carboxypeptidase Y has shown that the last 5 amino acids are essential for its inhibitory activity.

Hirugen, the C-terminal fragment of hirudin (residues 53-65) binds to and thereby protects thrombin against cleavage by trypsin, and to a lesser degree prevents the cleavage of thrombin by pancreatic elastase.
