One of the major signaling pathways used by eukaryotic cells to translate extracellular signals into cellular responses is the MAP (mitogen-activated protein) kinase cascade. So far, four MAPK subgroups (ERK, ERK5, JNK and p38) have been identified in humans. p38 beta is closely related to p38. They differ, however, in that p38 is equally well activated by MKK (MAP kinase kinase) 3, MKK4, and MKK6, while p38 beta is preferentially activated by MKK6. p38 beta also shows a strong substrate preference to ATF2 (activating transcription factor 2).
