GAL4 is a transcriptional activator which controls expression of the genes necessary for galactose catabolism. Two acidic regions of GAL4, activating region I (aa148-238) and activating region II (aa768-881) can activate transcription when independently joined to a DNA-binding domain. In addition, interaction with GAL80 has been reported to be mediated by aa848-881.
