Monolithic Silica Columns - Ultra-high performance without ultra-high pressure

Learn how silica monoliths are the column technology solution to the expensive upgrades in HPLC systems that are required with packed-particle columns to continually maximize performance versus particle size and backpressure. Monolithic silica columns contain one particle per (U)HPLC column and have proven their excellent suitability as the only true alternative to the packed particulate columns that have monopolized HPLC from its beginnings.

A new generation of High Resolution reversed-phase silica monoliths, Chromolith® HR, is now available from EMD Millipore. Their dramatically lower backpressures – even at high flow rates – free the chromatographer from the many restrictions and limitations of traditional packed columns such as flow rate, solvent selection, column length, and dependence on time-consuming sample pretreatment.

With Chromolith HR, methods are more rugged and easier to validate and transfer on any type of (U)HPLC, new or old. Column lifetimes are much longer, with more consistent performance. Chromolith columns are included in USP column packing material designations L1, L3, and L7. Chromolith columns have been used for many applications and show advantages over the currently popular new particle technologies like fused core and core-shell.
